Video from the Great White North

Tuesday, December 13th, 2011

Hope you enjoy these fun videos!

The first set are of B painting the snow. This is a really fun activity -- I just used the big spray bottles that can be used for cleaning supplies (the little ones are hard to push down on the nozzle in the cold with gloves). I filled them about 3/4 with water and then put in about 1/4 bottle of Crayola Washable Paints. They are non-toxic and make great colors in the snow, as you will see!

These next 2 are of B, Matt and my dad ice skating at the Meadow Park Sports Center in Whistler. She LOVED being on the ice and keeps asking me when we can go again. I told her that we had an ice rink here about 20 minutes away and she couldn’t believe that there would be ice skating in AZ!

These last 3 are of our dog sled adventure. These dogs were SUPER excited to be pulling us around -- you will see how crazy and LOUD they got! The owner of the company was our musher and she has 70 dogs that she uses in different combinations depending on what it is that she is doing. They are anywhere from 6-8 dog teams and she mixes and matches dogs throughout the ride. You will see loose dogs running alongside the sleds too -- they go out with her just in case she needs extra dogs along the way.

ENJOY!!

AIDS walk Thank You

Wednesday, November 2nd, 2011

I wanted to say a HUGE thank you to everyone who donated to my
Aids Walk Phoenix Profile last month. Because of your generosity, I was able to
almost double my fundraising goal with a total of $180.00. The goal of our team
was pretty simple: to have 100 registered participants each raise $100. On the
day of the walk we had over 200 registered walkers on our team and 20
registered dogs. We were the second largest group participating in Aids Walk
this year (231 animal and human participants) surpassing companies like
American Express, Southwest Airlines and Safeway. We may have come in second in
terms of team size, but what we lacked in manpower we made up for in the total
funds we raised. Our team leader, Barbara Seville, asked our team to raise a
total of $17,000 in donations. This was a significant increase over the
previous years total and would certainly be a challenge to raise that much
money before the deadline.

You are probably wondering how much did our team, Barbara’s
Wonderful 100, raise and donate to Aids Walk Phoenix for 2011? Over $27,000!!!
Hitting and surpassing our $17,000 goal this year made it the 10th consecutive
year Barbara’s Team had at least hit her team donation goal for this event.

While talking with Barbara at one of the fundraising events for
Aids Walk, she told me about a woman, also named Barbara (I’m calling her B2 to
avoid confusion) who heads up another AIDS Walk Team named Team Rychard. The
team is named after B2’s son, who had died of AIDS back in the 1980s when very
little was known about the disease. Each year Team Rychard and The Wonderful
100 are either #1 or #2 in donation totals without exception. The two Barbara’s
sought each other out so they could meet their competition face to face and in
doing so have developed a friendship and a great deal of respect for each
other. The Wonderful 100 have been the top donating team for the past few years
forcing Team Rychard in the #2 spot. This year after both teams had finished
the walk, Barbara offered B2 every cent The Wonderful 100 had raised to Team
Rychard. The two Barbara’s combined their donation totals and under the name
Team Rychard donated a total of $44,206.22.

Thank you all again for donating to me, to The Wonderful 100 and
eventually Team Rychard. It was a great event and is something Justin and I are
committed to participating in every year from now on. Thank you all again. I
sincerely appreciate your love and support.

For a GOOD Cause :)

I am posting this for my brother because he asked, and because I am such a nice sister ;)

Hope you all are having a great weekend!

Hello Everyone!

I wanted to let everyone know that Justin and I are participating in the 2011 AIDS Walk Phoenix and while we may be on the same team, we are competing to see which one of us can raise more than the other. Our team is called Barbara’s Wonderful 100 and its goal is to have 100 people raise at least $100 before the walk that takes place on Sunday, October 2nd. For the past two years The Wonderful 100 has raised more for this cause in the Phoenix area than any other individual, team or organization so I am excited about being involved with such a successful team.
So here is what I need to ask of everyone who reads my sister’s blog…I need donations, big or small! You might be saying, “But how could I get the donation to you before the event next week?” I would reply by saying, “What an insightful question! Aids Walk Phoenix has made it simple to donate online directly to my personal profile which links to my teams page.” The link to my profile is

and as I said can pledge your donation from the secure website using your credit card. It will automatically update my fundraising amount so just will know just how badly he is being beaten.

This is event is kicking off Justin and my commitment to giving back to the organizations and charities that have really helped develop and strengthen our community. Donations can be any amount and I will appreciate whatever you are able and willing to donate. I cannot lose to Justin because he will never let me hear the end of it! Thank you for reading this over and after the event next weekend I will send my sister and couple of pictures as well as the result of our little competition. Hope you have a great week!

A Day of Reflection

Sunday, September 11th, 2011

I have held onto this article for awhile now, trying to figure out when would be the best time to post it to the blog. As I woke up this morning and saw the news and internet awash with images and interviews from 10 years ago, I thought that today would be appropriate.  I think it is a good reminder to us all about what life should truly be about and how we need to evaluate the ways in which we spend our precious time.

And She Danced
July 13, 2011by Estelle Sobel Erasmus of “Musings on Motherhood and Midlife”

My eighteen-month-old daughter, Crystal, and I recently attended a reading group at the library where the teacher asked all the moms and their babies to form a tight circle on the floor. I watched as the toddlers ran to sit on the laps of their mothers. My daughter stood a few feet away. I called out to her, and she strode toward me. Then suddenly, and with great purpose she turned around, moved into the center of the circle and began to dance.

I watched my daughter spin around the floor in reckless abandon, her feet moving in a wild motion, to some music in her mind. The music first carried her toward the other mothers and children and then away; I felt her palpable joy. I worried that the other moms would resent my child’s insistence on taking center stage, but I saw smiles on their faces instead of the disapproving frowns I feared. I marveled at the wonder that is my daughter as she moved. She acted so clearly in the moment. No worries, fears or thoughts for the future interfered with her actions.

Had I ever been that way, I wondered. If so, could I be like that again? Could I become as free and unfettered as a child with her whole life ahead of her, ready and willing to be the star of her own production?

I am Crystal’s mother but I already admire her fortitude, determination and intense desire to be recognized as if she were my equal. To me, she’s a complete little person who is already so comfortable in her skin that she draws people in with that very confidence. I suppose it might be credited to me and my husband. Some might say that we’ve instilled in her a feeling that the world is a safe place. Personally, I think she was born that way.

I have always considered myself to be like a kite, freer than everyone I knew, soaring above the ground powered by my own imagination. I was a writer and editor, with few responsibilities besides those of my career. Then I married and had my child. Over time, I have become as grounded as a great oak tree. Yet through my daughter I see my possibilities all over again. With purpose of mind and crystal clear intention she – and I – can do anything.

I fear for her, too. Will the vicissitudes of childhood knock her down, hurt her strong self-esteem? Children can be so cruel. I don’t want her to be bullied, but I don’t want her to be a mean girl either. So what can I do? Childhood is short and there are life lessons ahead to be learned. What can any mother do, but wish for their child a road easier than her own and hope to pave her child’s way along that road with the mortar of the mother’s hard-earned wisdom.

So I watch her as she dances, carrying my heart in her every spin, foot flourish and smile.

Dance, my darling daughter, dance! And take me with you on your journey across the floor and through the years. What mommy knows is that you’re young only once, but if you have the right loving support, you can be young in spirit forever.

Do not take one single breath for granted and ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS, ‘dance.’

-Dedicated to my little dancer who always shows me the way that we should all live our life :)

Love and reflection today and always,

Lisa

A True Vacation

Wednesday, September 7th, 2011

Happy End of Summer :)

Just wanted to share some pictures from our week-long trip to CA.  Matt did NO work while we were there so it was his first true vacation in about 2 years since we went to Whistler.  All of the trips we usually take tie-in somehow to games he is seeing in the cities we go to but this time it was purely for a get-away and we all really enjoyed it.

We had a fabulous 30th Birthday party for Matt (Thanks to Tom and Sheri!) and saw lots of friends and family that we hadn’t spent time with in a very long time.  It was wonderful to see everyone and catch up and celebrate Matt turning the big 3-0!

We also spent most of the week in Carlsbad at the beach.  We visited the tide pools as part of our beach unit for Homeschooling and we went to Seaport Village as well as just spending time flying a kite on the beach and building sandcastles and collecting shells.  Braelyn did NOT want to leave and we all miss the cooler weather of the CA coast :)

Hope you all are doing well and that you enjoy our video collage of the SUPER fun time we had!

Pomp and Circumstance

Sunday, May 22nd, 2011

Well, our little Braelyn has officially graduated from her preschool days and is now on to bigger and better things!

Friday she participated in the graduation ceremony put on by her wonderful preschool teacher Miss Kristin :) She had such a great time this year and Matt and I were so grateful to have a place to take her that she enjoyed and that we felt was a safe and educational place for her to spend time.

We are still looking into school options for next year and will be trying some homeschooling this summer in addition to taking her back to her preschool for a sumer camp for 3 weeks in June.

I hope you enjoy these video clips from the ceremony and the pictures as well. Happy Sunday!

Easter Fun

Monday, May 2nd, 2011

Hello to all of our friends and family :)

Things here in the AZ desert are starting to heat up and we are staying busy (as usual!) and trying to enjoy the last few weeks of nice weather.

Matt has been tirelessly working at his new role with the Dbacks, traveling between Vegas, New Mexico, Colorado, Utah and Wyoming along with seeing every draft eligible player here in AZ!  It has been an adjustment for all of us but we are looking forward to the draft in June and hopefully, a bit of downtime to recoup and recharge our batteries.  We are trying to plan some sort of get away for the 2 of us, but aren’t sure when or where that will work out.  We have taken a trip together each of the last 3 years (San Francisco, Canada and NYC) and we are hoping that we can continue the tradition and make it 4 in a row :)

Braelyn is still taking swim classes and progressing very well, despite how hard the skill sets are.  They are working on mastering the breast stroke and butterfly stroke and she is sometimes frustrated that her arms and legs don’t move together more smoothly!  The instructors warned us this may be the case because they moved her up so young, but nevertheless, she still enjoys it and it is good exercise for her each week.  She is also almost ready to graduate from her preschool class – May 20.  She has really enjoyed her teacher and her experience this year and I wish that her preschool teacher would teach Kindergarten because I think she is amazing but alas, that is not the case.  We still aren’t 100% sure where she will be in August – if we will homeschool her or if she will go to my Elementary school out of district.  I have spoken with the Gifted Program Director and they don’t have the funding to test before Kindergarten so he told me that he would test her in January and then promote her to the Gifted Program in 1st grade.  The program is really great – they do a gifted curriculum in 1-8 grade and I think it would be really good for her.  We looked into a couple of charter schools but 1 has a very long wait list (we are #16) and the other was not a good fit for us.  We still have a few months to decide but I can’t believe Kindergarten is on the horizon!  Braelyn is also taking a jazz dance class at her old studio and she is really getting into it.  She is the youngest one in class but her teacher loves her ‘enthusiasm’ and she follows along pretty well.

I have been super busy with some budding opportunities for my business as well as agility with Casie and maintaining our household in the midst of the crazy times we have here.  We are producing 2 new lines of products and are working with some potential BIG retailers and are very close to launching in their stores.  Agility is still weekly and Casie is doing so well.  She and I have a great time showing off her skills and being around other people who are just as crazy about their dogs as I am!  I will probably compete with her in some fun runs this summer or some evening trials just to keep it interesting and fun.  She hates the hot weather so we will keep the hard work at a minimum but she exercises everyday with Braelyn in the pool so she is staying in shape for agility.

We had a nice trip to San Diego for Easter a few weeks ago when Matt managed to get a few days in a row off.  Braelyn really liked being around other kiddos for the egg hunt and doing all of the activities and crafts that Gramma Sheri and Aunt Devyn had prepared for her.  The weather was gorgeous, the company was fantastic and the food (thanks to Jan and Bob) was super yummy!  We were very thankful for our time together and for the fact that Sara and Emma came down and spent the day with us.  It was a nice weekend and time for all of us to be together.

I hope you enjoy the pictures from our celebration and that you have a wonderful week as we head into May and the start of summertime!

Love to you all,

Lisa

Florida Trip

Sunday, February 6th, 2011

Hi to All!

We hope that you had a wonderful holiday season and were able to spend much time with loved ones :)

We have had a hectic winter with Matt’s ‘off-season’ not really taking place this year. Lots of things we normally had time for, we haven’t had this go around. We even had to reschedule our Florida Family trip because his organizational meetings were planned right smack dab in the middle!! Luckily we were able to make it work and rearrange the flights and accomodations for the 10 people that were able to go with us on our fun, family adventure.

We ended up having a GREAT time visiting 4 different parks and seeing family and friends that made a special effort to spend time with us on our visit. The timing was perfect and the parks were virtually empty (by Disney standards). We never waited more than 10 minutes for any ride and we were able to move the wheelchairs throughout the parks pretty easily.

Matt, Braelyn and I ran ourselves ragged – getting up about 6AM and heading to the parks at first opening and then getting back to the timeshare about 10 at night. We all hung in there pretty well until Friday when we got home and at that point, we were so exhausted, we needed a vacation from our vacation. Although it was so tiring, we felt like it was what we needed to do. After all, we had spent the money, traveled across the country and we felt like we should see what there was to see since we probably won’t be going back anytime soon. We did Disneyworld and The Wild Animal Kingdom together as a big group and then Matt, Braelyn, Chris, Justin and I did Epcot. The big ‘kids’ also got to go to Universal Orlando and see the Harry Potter theme park which was VERY exicting for HP fanatics like Chris and I. It was VERY cool and we enjoyed ourselves.

I also FINALLY got to meet my business partner, Melissa in person. We have known each other for about 2 years and communicated through email, skype and phone multiple times per day since we started our business last December but we had never officially met until last week. It was REALLY nice to meet her and spend time in person together and just laugh and joke in the flesh instead of through the virtual world. She showed me our production process, her art process and all of our techie goodies like our giant canvas printer and our super-fast computer, none of which I had ever seen except in photos. It’s great that we can run our business from opposite sides of the country because of technology but nothing replaces talking and seeing the person face-to-face. It was SO GREAT!

Things went as smoothly as possible for traveling with 10 people, 3 wheelchairs, 1 5 year old and the ins and outs that go along with cross-country travel. Everyone had a wonderful time and we had some really nice memories to bring home with us. We are thankful that we were able to make the trip and that our family was able to come along with us to celebrate Brealyn’s 5th Birthday and all of my grandparents’ 80th Birthdays. Disney does everything top-notch and it is worth every penny you spend at their parks because they always make sure you have a great time – we sure did.

I hope you enjoy the video of just some of the wonderful times we had at the Happiest Place on Earth :)

Love to All,

Lisa

Braelyn Dance Recital 2010

Sunday, November 28th, 2010

Hello Everyone!

I hope you all had a WONDERFUL Thanksgiving :)   We had a great time with family and lots and lots of yummy food!

Braelyn performed at her annual Winter Dance Concert at Glendale Glitters last night and they did a tap routine to the song “Baby it’s Cold Outside.”  They all did a really good job!  She had to wear tights and they were falling down a bit so you will notice that she hikes up her skirt in the front and shows off her undies and tries to pull them up -- LOL!  It was pretty funny but like a true performer she carried on with her routine until she was done and then complained to me about them backstage afterwards!

Anyway, we are sending our best wishes to you all and hoping that you are enjoying the Holiday Season and all that it means to you -- tapping, tights or lights!!!!  Much Love -- Lisa.
